It’s not about what ChatGPT can do; it’s about how you tell it what to do.
Today, we’re going to break down the most effective strategies to help you get the most out of your prompts.
This is how the game is played.
Framework Overview
A single approach to writing prompts won’t cut it. Just like life, you’ve got to adapt to the situation.
Different tasks? Different strategies.
Here are four of the most powerful frameworks I’ve found:
RTF
RISEN
RODES
Chain of Density
Each of these helps you craft prompts that do more than just spit out words—they deliver results. Let’s dive in.
RTF Framework
Role: Define the role ChatGPT should assume.
Task: Clearly outline the task at hand.
Format: Specify the preferred format for the output.
Example: “Act like an experienced financial advisor (Role). Create a step-by-step plan for saving $10,000 in one year (Task). Present the plan in a bullet-point list (Format).”
Application: The RTF framework is ideal for general-purpose tasks where clear, actionable outputs are required. For someone looking to optimize their weekend side hustle efforts, this framework can be instrumental in crafting precise, easy-to-follow plans or guides.
RISEN Framework
Role: Specify the role for ChatGPT.
Instructions: Provide detailed instructions for the task.

Narrowing: Add constraints or specific requirements.
Example: “Role: You’re a business strategist with experience in online marketing. Instructions: Write a comprehensive marketing plan for a new e-commerce business. Steps: 1. Start with market research, 2. Develop a content strategy, 3. Plan a social media campaign. End Goal: The plan should aim to increase online sales by 20% in six months. Narrowing: Focus on budget-friendly strategies only.”

RODES Framework
Role: Assign a role to ChatGPT.

Example: “Role: You’re a social media content creator. Objective: Write a series of tweets about productivity hacks. Details: Include references to well-known productivity techniques. Examples: Use examples like ‘Pomodoro Technique’ and ‘Time Blocking’. Sense Check: Confirm that the tweets should be under 280 characters each.”
Application: The RODES framework is particularly useful for tasks where examples can guide the output. For someone aiming to stay ahead in the competitive tech industry, this framework can help create effective and engaging content efficiently.
Chain of Density
Instructions: Start with clear instructions for the task.
Recursion: Refine the output through a recursive process.
Benchmark: Provide benchmarks or standards for quality.

Example: “Instructions: Here is a draft of a blog post. Improve its clarity and impact. Recursion: Revise the post five times, each time focusing on enhancing readability and engagement. Benchmark: Ensure the final version aligns with top-ranking blog posts in terms of readability and SEO. Additional Guidelines: Keep the tone professional yet approachable.”

Prompt Example:
"Role: You're a business strategist with experience in...
Instructions: Write an in-depth business plan about...
Steps: 1. Start with..., 2. Proceed with..., 3. Conclude with...
End Goal: The goal is...
Narrowing (constraints): Don't use..."
RODES Framework
Good for: When you have examples similar to your desired output Marketing posts (e.g. Social media content, landing pages)
R - Role
O - Objective
D - Details
E - Examples
S - Sense Check
Prompt Example:
"Role: You're a content creator with experience in...
Objective: Write a X thread about...
Details: Include the following points...
Examples: Here are 3 examples of good X threads...
Sense Check: Do you understand the objective for this task?"
Chain of Density
The Chain of Density is a prompt that uses recursion to create increasingly better outputs.
Good for: Article summaries; Improving your prompts; Improving long-form content via recursion;
I - Instructions
R - Recursion
B - Benchmark
A - Additional Guidelines
Prompt Example:
"Instructions: Here is [insert content you want to improve]. You will generate increasingly improved versions of this content.
Recursion: Repeat the following 2 steps 5 times.
Step 1. Identify 1-3 points from the initial output which are missing.
Step 2. Write a new, improved output of identical length which includes the missing points.
Benchmark: Here is more information on what makes a good XYZ: [Insert info]
Additional Guidelines: Follow these specific [guidelines]."
3. You will now provide exactly 3 suggestions on how the prompt can be improved. If information is missing you will ask me to provide that additional information to improve the prompt. The goal is to get the chosen template filled out in the most comprehensive and precise way.
4. We will continue this iterative process 5 times with me providing additional information to you and you updating the prompt in the Revised prompt section until the prompt is complete.That’s it for this week.
